Hello, I'm Sarah.
I'm a documentary photographer, freelance photojournalist and visual storyteller based in Calgary, Alberta, where I have the privilege of working on the traditional territories of the Treaty 7 Nations and the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.
I love documenting our human story.
Whether I'm creating portraits, producing a documentary, photographing a community event or working alongside an organization to tell its story, I'm drawn to moments that reveal something honest about who we are and how we connect with one another. I believe the most meaningful stories aren't always the loudest or the fastest. They emerge through curiosity, observation and time.
I hold a diploma in Photojournalism from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and a degree in Professional Communication from Royal Roads University. During my studies at SAIT, I completed a practicum with The Globe and Mail, where I continue to contribute long-form visual stories as a freelance photojournalist.
For the past two and a half years, I taught journalism at SAIT, focusing on ethics, social media and visual storytelling. Today, my focus has shifted toward documentary filmmaking, independent journalism and building media projects that privilege depth, nuance and human connection.
I'm currently completing a thesis-based Master of Arts in Professional Communication at Royal Roads University, supported by a SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarship. My research explores visual communication and social semiotics, with a particular interest in how images construct meaning and shape the way we understand ourselves, one another and the world around us. That same curiosity informs every project I take on, whether for a national publication, an organization or an individual.
If you have a story that deserves thoughtful visual storytelling, I'd love to hear from you.
Kind regards,
Sarah
